The New Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The much-anticipated new addition to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the Star Wars-themed Galaxy’s Edge land, is now open! From the moment you step through, you feel like you’ve just walked onto the set of one of the movies. It is a truly immersive experience; the attention to detail on everything you see is incredible, from the landscaping to the cast members’ costumes.

Replicas of various ships provide plenty of great photo opportunities. There’s a stand that serves the famous blue milk that Luke Skywalker drinks in the original A New Hope film. I didn’t try the blue milk during my visit, but I did stop by Kat Saka’s Kettle, which serves a tasty sweet and salty popcorn.

Star Wars fans will love the bounty of merchandise available throughout Galaxy’s Edge. Jedis in training can choose from a variety of robes and lightsabers. You can even build your own custom lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop. If you’re looking to build a custom droid, head over to the Droid Depot, where you pick the parts you want to build with from a conveyor belt and then assemble your droid.

The definite highlight of Galaxy’s Edge for me was the Smugglers Run ride, which lets you fly the Millennium Falcon! As you approach the attraction, you’re greeted by an impressive model of the ship itself. The final waiting area before you actually board the Millennium Falcon’s cockpit to go on your mission is breathtaking—there’s even a replica of the chess-like game R2D2 and Chewbacca played in A New Hope. For a lifelong Star Wars fan like me, it was a total geek out moment.

Six guests ride at a time, and teams of two are assigned to a role: pilot, gunner, or engineer. Everyone must work together to complete the mission, and your score is displayed at the end. The experience reminded me of an interactive Star Tours. The visuals are stunning, and it’s an absolute thrill to fly in one of the coolest, if not THE coolest, starships ever.

Galaxy’s Edge is a not-to-be-missed experience that truly makes you feel like you’re in a galaxy far, far away. And with the opening of a second ride, Rise of the Resistance, in December, you definitely want to plan a visit to Hollywood Studios soon.
